Live like minority or we soon will be
24. March 2009 by Norman Jameson, BR Editor
Richard Blackaby (

) says Christians ought to live like we’re in the minority. If trends continue in America, we will be.
Living as if we are in the minority would change our sense of urgency.
Living as the major player in a culturally Christian region has lulled us into the sinful luxury of internecine squabbling and dulled our ears to the cries of our neighbors.
A report from the Program on Public Values at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., says Christians comprise just 76 percent of the population, down from 86 percent in 1990.
The survey says organized religion plays less of a role in many lives.
And we cannot shrug off the facts by repeating the bromide, “I’m not a member of any organized religion — I’m a Baptist.”
Almost one third of married couples did not have a religious ceremony and more than a fourth say they do not want a religious funeral.
Trinity College surveyed 54,461 adults throughout last year.
It found that Catholics comprise 25.1 percent of the population and Baptists 15.8 percent. “Mainline” Christian bodies like Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Anglican and United Church of Christ combine for 12.9 percent.
Those who claim “no religion” are 15 percent of the population.
Baptists claim to be evangelical.
Evangelicals by definition are those who tell the Good News, again, as Blackaby said, “door to door, relationship to relationship, neighbor to neighbor.” It looks like we’ve been keeping the Good News to ourselves.
Are you offering your neighbor a reason for the hope that is within you? Does that hope bubble up and spill over in conversation? Do you get caught up and dragged down in doom and gloom conversations? Has your Jesus burst forth from the tomb? Have you told a friend?
